Binance Founder and CEO Faces Possible Sanctions Over Compliance Violations

Changpeng Zhao, the founder and CEO of Binance, has been accused of serious compliance violations by the US Treasury Department. As part of a settlement agreement, Binance will be subject to five years of monitoring and significant compliance undertakings.

The allegations against Binance are severe. Furthermore, Binance enabled Hamas' military wing al-Qassam Brigades, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, al-Qaeda, and other criminals to conduct transactions.

According to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Binance allowed illicit actors to transact freely, supporting activities such as child sexual abuse, illegal narcotics, and terrorism across more than 100,000 transactions. This is a clear violation of US laws designed to protect financial systems from these types of illegal activities.

The settlement agreement acknowledges Binance's responsibility for its historical compliance violations. In a statement, the company admitted that it made 'misguided decisions' as it quickly grew to become the world's largest crypto exchange. The company will be subject to close monitoring and must ensure complete exit from the United States, among other requirements.
